Apple recently released the developer beta of iOS 27, with the public beta expected later this month and the full release planned for September. The update is compatible with the iPhone 11 and newer, including the second-generation iPhone SE and later. However, the new Apple Intelligence features require newer hardware. Most AI features are available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 and 17 models, while a few of the most advanced on-device AI capabilities are limited to Apple's newest devices.
The biggest addition is the new Siri AI. Siri can now understand more natural conversations, remember personal context from messages and emails, and complete actions across multiple apps without requiring several separate commands. Apple has also added AI improvements throughout iOS. Safari can organize tabs automatically, Photos includes smarter search and editing tools, Shortcuts is easier to build using natural language, and the new Live Recognition feature can identify objects and read text through the camera, making the iPhone even more helpful for users with visual impairments. Apple has also continued refining the Liquid Glass design by improving readability, animations, and overall responsiveness throughout the system.
After trying iOS 27, my overall impression is very positive. This isn't a major redesign like some previous versions. Instead, Apple focused on refining the experience and making the iPhone feel smarter. The AI features are genuinely useful because they save time rather than simply adding flashy tools. Many of the improvements are small, but together they make everyday tasks feel smoother and more polished.
One change I'm less enthusiastic about is the growing number of ways to activate Siri. You can still say 'Hey Siri,' hold the side button, or double tap the bottom of the screen to bring up the Siri interface. With iOS 27, Apple also introduced a swipe down gesture from the top center of the display for Siri AI when it's enabled. While having multiple options gives users flexibility, it also feels a bit excessive and can make the experience more confusing than it needs to be. Overall, though, iOS 27 is a strong update that focuses on thoughtful improvements instead of dramatic changes, and I think most iPhone users will appreciate the refinements.
